One of the weirdest shots from last night’s Elimination Chamber PPV… apparently, the fans were overwhelmingly against CM Punk winning back the WWE Championship against The Rock.

However, I did notice Brandon Stroud and Anarchy Championship Wrestling manager extraordinaire Chris Trew hanging out there on the bottom left. I asked Chris via Twitter what the deal was with all those hand-copied CM PUNK SUCKS signs. His response:

“Those signs were handed out at the front and I got into an argument with an adult over them.”

In an industry where minorities don’t get enough good roles as it is, it’s always a little disconcerting for me to watch California-born Natalie Wood play a Puerto Rican immigrant, or peep Mickey Rooney with taped back eye-lids hamming it up in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It would be nice to think that we’re past these kinds of painful and unpleasant features of Tinsel Town’s yesteryear, but even today there are reverberations of the same idea: Hollywood just doesn’t want to hire people of color, and when they do, rarely do they ever want to show them in a light outside of a certain mode – the “spicy” Latina, the sassy black woman, the nerdy Asian. Even though today most filmmakers know that blackface and all variations thereof are, you know, probably not a good idea - studios have still tried to circumvent the risk of protests and petitions by simply changing roles intended for people of color to white roles. But it’s not that simple…

So, I was thinking about BBC Sherlock fandom’s hate-on for Sally Donovan, and just earlier today I was talking with Maria about Tara Thorton’s shitty treatment in True Blood.

And then I made myself a list.

You’re not fooling anyone, fandom. I know what’s up.

They want these women to be invisible and get upset when they’re not. Then they’re bitches, sexless (i.e. no chemistry with ANYONE), or sluts. And it’s not like the show writers don’t have the same problem, those tropes are a consistent fallback when it comes to any major characterization of black female characters. But when they step out of those tropes (Bonnie becoming more assertive, not just a support system for the white female lead; Martha wanting the Doctor to see her in a romantic way, not just as a support system for the white lead; Gwen being the LOVE object of several male characters, not just a support system for the white lead)  fandom goes apeshit cause their worldview is being messed with. These women are not supposed to be important, loved, complicated in their minds, just easily forgotten once the episode is over.

… reminds me of how many roleplayers seem to think white people and East Asians are interchangeable due to their light skin — BUT only in ONE direction that favours white-washing.

I don’t know how many people reading this roleplay on InsaneJournal, but I remember reading through requests for face claim/PB suggestions on ~find_a_pb — and I would see all of these posts like, ‘I’m playing an Asian character at X game! So please give me Asian or white actors I can use for them!’, but NEVER anything like, ‘I’m playing a white character at X game! So please give me Asian PBs in addition to white ones!’ Nope, it’s always ‘White actors only!’ if the character is supposed to be white.

I think it depends on the fandom.

In anime fandoms, people can get seriously irate if you don’t use Japanese/Korean people for your characters; it depends. Blond characters usually get a pass to be white, but otherwise there’s a lot of side-eye. I remember a white chick used a white person to be Iruka in a Naruto RP once and no one told her anything to her face, but we all looked at her like >| we sekritly hate you.

But obviously that MOSTLY based in fetishization/white people holding all things Japanese (or things that look Japanese, at least) in the highest regard, rather than trying to be racially correct, though there are a few people who are actually cognizant of it. They were largely non-white, tho.

(And lol, guess how many people actually keep brown skinned characters brown skinned, period)
